A family checklist for NZ school holiday planning

Bring school dates, work leave and family commitments into one practical holiday plan.

Independent NZ planning guide · Dates reviewed 18 October 2026

Family holiday planning works best when school time and work time are treated as two separate calendars. Start with the published school break, then check the dates that apply to your own school before arranging leave or booking a trip.

Build one shared calendar

Add the three between-term breaks, your school’s confirmed summer closing and reopening dates, and any teacher-only days. Add each adult’s work commitments separately. Highlight the days when children are home but adults still need to work; those are the dates that need a care or leave plan.

Make a plan for ordinary days too

A holiday does not need a trip every day. Set aside a few anchor activities, leave some days open and agree on a realistic spending limit. Keep a wet-weather option ready. A local library visit, a picnic or time with family can sit alongside a bigger outing.

Check before you pay

Confirm that activity providers operate on your chosen dates, check age limits and read cancellation terms. If you are sharing care with another household, agree on pickup times, transport and emergency contact details directly.

Leave space around travel

A recovery day before school resumes can make unpacking, laundry and getting ready easier. When comparing travel dates, include the cost of extra leave and care as well as the fare. A cheaper ticket may require more weekdays away from work.

Keep the plan flexible

School notices should take priority over a general calendar. Review your plan when a school publishes its final dates. Our school holiday section shows the national framework and identifies the start and finish dates that schools can vary.
